What Flowers Attract Hummingbirds and Butterflies?

Nowadays, people are debating a lot over whether flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies or not. Some people believe that the nectar in flowers draws these creatures to plants, while others believe that different colors of flowers are responsible for this.

Hummingbirds and butterflies are avid nectar drinkers, and they love nothing more than a nice garden full of colorful flowers that can provide them with a nutritious snack. Nectar is a sweet liquid that flowers produce to attract pollinators. Hummingbirds and butterflies pollinate the flowers while the flowers provide nectar for them to drink.

Many gardeners enjoy having colorful flowers specifically planted to attract these winged creatures. Some of the most popular flowers that attract them are listed below.

Ryno Lawn Care offers a flower bed clean-up service and we would be happy to plant some of these flowers for you.

Tubular Flowers

Tubular flowers have a long, cylindrical shape. They have different colors, and their petals are often twisted or curled.

They produce more nectar than other flowers, so the butterflies and hummingbirds are more likely to find them attractive.

The tubular shape of many flowers makes it easy for them to get nectar from inside. The hummingbird’s bill is specially adapted to fit into the narrow opening of the tubular flowers.

Similarly, butterflies have a long, coiled tongue that can extend deep into the flower. Their tongues are also very flexible to probe for nectar in the tight spaces between the petals.

Bee Balm

Bee balm, or Monarda, is a beautiful perennial flower that attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. This flower is a part of the mint family and is native to eastern North America.

Bee balm blooms in late spring and summer, providing nectar for pollinators from early summer until frost.

They have many colors, including pink, white, purple, and red. Bee balm can tolerate partial shade, but usually, they require full sun.

Growing red-colored bee balm in your garden will increase the beauty of your lawn, and you get to see hummingbirds wandering around it.

Black-Eyed Susan

This flower is a favorite stop, especially for butterflies that are drawn to its bright yellow petals and deep brown centers.

The black-eyed Susan easily grows and attracts pollinators, making it an ideal flower for gardens and yards.

If the petals have orange or light red color, they will automatically attract hummingbirds; on the other hand, if the color is yellow or brown, you can witness butterflies wandering around it.

Aster

Asters are herbaceous plants, meaning they have a soft and green stem. They grow from a basal rosette of leaves and produce one or more flower heads.

Butterflies are attracted to asters because of their color, fragrance, and shape. Asters come in many colors, including blue, purple, and pink.

The scent of these flowers is believed to attract hummingbirds and butterflies because it mimics the scent of the nectar that these visitors crave.

Sedum

The sedum flower is a type of succulent plant often used in landscaping because they are drought tolerant and require very little care.

These perennial flowers start blooming in August, and they can grow approximately 10 to 30 inches tall and 14 to 25 inches wide.

It has small, star-shaped flowers in pink, red, and yellow shades and grows well in dry climates. They have large flower heads that allow butterflies and hummingbirds to sit on, from where they can easily drink nectar.

Azaleas

The azalea flower is a beautiful sight to behold, and it also serves an important purpose in the ecosystem.

With its vibrant colors and pleasant fragrance, it is no wonder this flower is so popular. But there is more to the azalea than just its good looks.

This flower also attracts hummingbirds. Similarly, you can find butterflies flitting around azaleas which helps to spread pollen and promote plant growth.

Conclusion

Flowers that make nectar, having specific shapes, colors, and scents, attract hummingbirds and butterflies. The bright-colored flowers in a garden can act as a beacon to these creatures, luring them in for a closer look.

Red color attracts hummingbirds the most, while butterflies are drawn to sweet-smelling flowers. You need to choose the right flowers to bring these beautiful creatures to your garden.
