Weed Control

Top Herbicides For Effective Weed Prevention

Summer has arrived and everything is thriving! Unfortunately, that includes the intrusive plant life you didn’t exactly invite to inhabit your lawn.

With so many herbicides on the market, you don’t want to waste your money on the wrong product. Effective treatment depends on the type of weed and how mature it is.

Fortunately, we’ve done some homework to save you time and money.

Top Weed Killers For North Texas Lawns:

Prodiamine

This is a pre-emergent herbicide, which means it works best when applied before the weeds have sprouted. It’s safe on common North Texas grasses, and can be applied in either Autumn or Springtime. Prodiamine effectively kills broadleaf weeds such as dandelions.

Dicamba

Effective as both a pre- and post-emergent treatment, this product is extra effective due to the fact that it is absorbed by both the roots and foliage of the plant. It works on broadleaf weeds, as well as woody weeds like poison oak.

Oxadiazon

This product is commonly used as a pre-emergent, but it also has post-emergent properties (meaning it can still kill weeds once they’ve sprouted). It works on brush vines, bramble, and broadleaf weeds by disrupting their growth process.

Carfentrazone-ethyl

Another one that’s effective for common broadleaf weeds, this product attacks the cellular membranes of a plant, causing necrosis. Carfentrazone-ethyl is fast working and safe for your lawn.

2, 4-D

This one is a post-emergent that’s been popular since 1945. It works well on young weeds by causing uncontrolled growth that ultimately kills them. Fortunately, 2, 4-D does not have the same effect on surrounding grass.

MCPA

This product is versatile in its weed-attacking abilities, as it is effective on less common intruders such as dock, thistle, and pea sprouts. MCPA is a post-emergent herbicide that scrambles the protein synthesis in harmful weeds. It’s safe to use alongside other products.

Triclopyr

This is another product which works by causing uncontrolled growth in weeds. Effective for both broadleaf and woody weeds, triclopyr is harmless to your lawn, but it can take a couple of weeks before it reaches its full effect.

Conclusion

  • Prodiamine: pre-emergent for broadleaf weeds.
  • Dicamba:  pre- and post-emergent treatment for spacious lawns.
  • Oxadiazon: pre- and post-emergent for broadleaves, brush vines and bramble.
  • Carfentrazone-ethyl: post-emergent; works faster than 2, 4-D.
  • 2, 4-D: post-emergent for young weeds.
  • MCPA: post-emergent herbicide that’s safe to use with other treatments, good for several types of weeds.
